AI Is Swallowing the Financial Terminal
As AI absorbs data and analysis, financial-information businesses must own the user's workflow.
OpenAI just launched ChatGPT for Financial Services. The obvious story is that AI is moving deeper into Wall Street.
The more important story is this: AI is starting to swallow the interface of the financial terminal. OpenAI is no longer asking users to bring a model to their data. It is putting premium financial data directly inside the AI experience—alongside reasoning, research, modeling, and document creation. That changes the competitive question.
For decades, financial-information businesses were built around three advantages: Data. Distribution. Workflow.
AI is compressing the first two.
If the model can access the same high-quality data, understand the user's intent, perform the analysis, and generate the output, the value shifts upward—from finding information to completing work. That means the future financial terminal may not look like a terminal at all.
It may look like:
Analyze why this company missed expectations, update my model, compare management commentary with the last four quarters, and draft the investment-committee note.
One sentence. One workflow. One output.
The moat therefore changes.
Owning data still matters. But owning the user's workflow matters more.
The winners will not be the companies with the most AI features. They will be the companies that redesign the entire journey from:
Question → evidence → reasoning → decision → action.
For every financial-information company, there is now one uncomfortable question: If the user no longer needs to navigate your product, what remains of your moat?
That is the question worth answering now.
